Urban Chameleons in Trinidad for Carnival

by today’s Urban Chameleon contributor
HaJ

This year apart of the HOTUC team attended carnival in Trinidad. For 7 days we traded in the laptops, Blackberry's, latte's, turkey brie sandwiches, Hot 97 and the winter cold for Doubles, Roti's, Salt fish, and Coconut bake to wine our hips under the sun listening to soca music.

In preparation for the trip, I decided to Wikipedia Trinidad Carnival since I‘d never been and wanted to know the history of the elaborate annual celebration. Here is what I found that many people who attend carnival don’t know

Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago originally has its roots in the 19th century, from both West African festivals and French Catholic carnival celebrations, where masks were donned and social visits ensued. When the use of drums and religious practices were prohibited following Emancipation (1838), slaves (and then former slaves) found novel ways to pass on their cultural heritage.

Similar celebrations were held by the slaves at the end of crops harvesting, hence the Crop Over celebrations in some other Caribbean islands. In Trinidad, the festival was known as Canboulay (from Cannes Brulees, or burnt cane), and incorporated African derived dancing and music (the precursor to Calypso) to transform Carnival into what we see today.

However, after Emancipation, the festival time was merged with the French settlers' and free coloureds' celebration, the pre-Lenten festival tied to the Roman Catholic carne vale (farewell to the flesh), in preparation for fasting and religious disciplines of Lent. It is now celebrated two days before Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent.

Now having this information I could feel spiritually justified to wine my hips in the streets with barely anything on.

Life in Trinidad during Carnival is like nothing else. For months this country prepares for days of non-stop partying. As soon as we landed we headed to a Bacanal Wednesday, a party where we watched live performances of different soca music artists until we left at 2AM. The next day we attended the Beach party that started at one in the afternoon and lasted until midnight! Eleven hours of endless drinks supplied from numerous open bars consisting of every kind of alcoholic beverage you can think of including white Hennessy, (apparently not sold here in the states), an outdoor champagne room and five different food stations that had at least ten different kinds of rice, Pilau, Doubles, Jerk chicken, seafood and the best lamb chops I’d ever tasted. There was even an out door restroom area that resembled the W hotel. These people do not play. It was a paaaarty!

The following day we decided to chill out and go to Maracas beach. Mind you there was a breakfast party that started at 5AM that we could have gone to, but instead decided to recharge. The beach was unbelievable and apparently it doesn’t even compare to Tobago, which unfortunately we didn’t get to, but was still good enough.

Once there we immediately sought out where to get the best Bake and Shark, (a traditional Trini meal consisting of fried shark and fried bread- oh yes!). The word was that Richard’s is the best, and it was clear, as his stand was the only one with a line in front. It did not disappoint!

Apparently this food critic agrees

After lunch, we dipped into the ocean, which was unbelievably warm, clear of jellyfish, seaweed, or any of that other weird stuff you see floating that messes with a city gal’s swim. The ocean waves were so perfect; they knocked you around so much that you knew you were going to sleep good when you returned home. ‘Cause there is no sleeping in Trinidad!

The next few days blended together. That night we went to Soca Monarch where artists performlive to take home the top title.

The following day we attended Brian Lara’s party, (the famous cricket player), where not only were there multiple open bar and food stations, that included Trini Indian and Trini Chinese food, but also a Hagaan Dazs ice cream station!

Yes people, this might have been the highlight of the entire trip. After all that curry there is nothing like encountering options of Baileys, coffee, vanilla and chocolate favored ice cream.

After being completely satisfied, we moved to where a crowd was forming in front of the stage that Mr. Lara had installed on his property for the party. JW and Blaze came out to perform their hit song PALANCE live! If you are Trini or have your ear to the Trini/ soca music streets you already know the magnitude of this song. See video below

This song was played 417 times during the two day Road March of Carnival. Speaking of which, after the performance it was time for us to go and prepare for Carnival. It begins with J’ouvert at 4AM Monday morning. Umm let's say this wake up call takes some serious mental preparation for a New Yorker.

J'ouvert requires putting on clothes that you’re prepared to have messed up as crowds gather in the streets to jump up to music and be smeared in paint. This tradition stems from when French settlers, in 1783, who were banned from the masquerade balls of the French . Slaves then created their own version using rituals and resources they had available to them including mud and molasses. In these ceremonies they would also mock their master’s balls. The picture above is an example of some people J’ouvert out!

It amazed me that these traditions have been able to stay in tact for so long.

Later that day started what feels like pre-carnival; it’s carnival without costumes. If you’re playing mas, (short for masquerade), you get with your band, (the group of people who have also signed up to your same costume group), to walk the country the entire day accompanied by a couple of trucks carrying humongous speakers blasting soca music, a traveling open bar, bathroom and snack cart. There is even an air-conditioned bus you can hop on and off of if you need a break. The next day you do it all over again in costume!

Trinidad Carnival is truly an unforgettable time. Sure there was a shoot out one night that we had to run away from. We all had Monday morning meetings and can’t be calling in shot. Another night some guy tried to steal our panties using a wire hanger through the window. Those incidents just add flavor to the memories and is rather a testament to how we continue to chameleon. Happy 2010 Trinidad Carnival!

Trini to the Bone

by today’s Urban Chameleon contributor

There are only five great people in the world and they are Trinidad, Trinidad, Trinidad, Trinidad, Trinidad. This is how uncle, Tony feels about his beloved country so much so that he refuses to travel on vacation to anywhere else from his Brooklyn home where he and my aunt live but to Trinidad. He claims Trinidad is the best place on planet earth, why go anywhere else. However, what I don’t understand is how he ended up together with my aunt who is Jamaican. Why not just marry a Trini instead of trying to convince a Jamaican for over twenty years now how much better Trinidad is? Regardless, Uncle Tony never misses a moment to mess with the Jamaican side of our family.

This past Memorial Day weekend, I came down early one morning for breakfast where uncle, Tony was sipping some coffee and eating a traditional Trini breakfast. He has an entire section in the pantry that is just of his precious Trini products that he brings back from every visit. He says to me. “You want some Trini breakfast?”

“No that’s ok uncle, Tony I’m just going to scramble some eggs.”

He grunts as if to say that I’m missing out. A couple of moments of silence go by until he begins to tell me that he one day saw Bob Marley eating chicken. Incase you aren’t aware Bob Marley eating chicken would be considered Sac religious being that Rastafarians generally believe that touching meat is touching death. However, Uncle Tony swears that Bob was gnawing on a bone.

“Uncle Tony where would you have seen Bob Marley eating chicken?”

“In Trinidad! Where else.”

“He was not.”

“I am telling you, Bob Marley was at Sammy's chicken shack right up the street from where I grew up gnawing on several chicken bones just eatin’ up all dat good chicken. He had on some dark sunglasses trying to hide in disguise but I know it was him. What made me even notice him in da first place is that I sensed someone was in dat chicken shack not from Trinidad only to see Bob Marley himself. ”

“Uncle Tony, I don’t know if I believe you.”

“It’s ok dear, you can't blame Bob. Trinidad’s chicken is the BEST in the world…if I was Bob I would be sneaking off to Sammy's shack too.

Uncle Tony can’t help but to mess with me this morning. He is just Trini to da bone.

Damn Tiger Woods, How’d You Do It?

by today’s Urban Chameleon contributor

My fabulous Urban Chameleon girlfriends and I call our selves looking to evolve our fabulousity this summer and decided to look into golf- anything to throw white people off with our diverse skill set. Now mind you it’s not like we go looking to throw off white people but if they would stop acting so surprised by our accomplishments then we’ll stop.

Anyhoo hoo to the hoo, the golf obsession started last summer during a trip that my husband and I took with my Jewish best friend and her Jewish husband to the Berkshires. Her husband took us to the driving range to give us a beginner’s lesson. My Jewish girlfriend is not that into golf and much rather go hiking but me being the Urban Chameleon that I am insisted on taking in every note and detail he gave me about perfecting my form just so that I can one day show up on the course in a kente cloth dashiki, Dior shaded and a head wrap and shut’em down. The following day I was ready to get back out there but my Jewish friend insisted on us having a "girls" day sipping Pinot by the pool. As much as I want to expand those skills nothing beats sipping Pinot by the pool so we let the boys have a golf day instead. My husband who is from south west Philly returned at the end of the day after playing 18 holes for the first time to say, “Golf is no bitch ass sport, I’m tired as hell.”

But this year the girls and I are game! (With the exception of the Jewish one who rather watch with Pinot) This past weekend, a Haitian, a Trinidadian, a Jamaican and a Panamanian showed up at Chelsea Piers bright and early ready to start golf lessons except for one tiny problem, THE COST! Not only is golf no bitch ass sport it’s also no cheap ass sport. No wonder there are more brothas playing basketball. Damn Tiger! Much respect and another clear example of how it takes money to make money he clearly is seeing the return on his investment. But we young adult Caribbean Chameleons are currently in the stage of trying to pay off Visa and Mastercard for all that already invested fabulousity before leaping into any additional kind of extreme investment. So trying to prove a point will have to wait. I wonder how much tennis is?

What Happen to Our Cultural Boundaries?

by today's Urban Chameleon contributor

I find it quite amazing how boldly white people think they have
evolved with their education of Black people's hair. Shit some of them are even wearing Black hair.

Just the other day my manager asks how do I wash my box braids. Now yall know she didn't use the words "Box braids" it was more of a pointing in the direction of my head with something that sounded like "How do you wash those/that/thingy's" until she safely landed on the word hair. "Do you have to take them out every time?" Hmmm now I quickly caught myself catching an attitude because how dare she even assume that my hair isn't real. In fact the reason I paid an extra $250 for the good hair is for even Black girls to have to second guess. So for my white manager from Wyoming to be calling me out- I really wasn't feeling her so I told her,“ I wash my her like you wash yours” and smiled to cover up my attitude. But man do I miss the days where you could come to work on Mondays with the short Halle Berry hairdo from the 90's

and then show up Tuesday with hair down your back

and white people just say, "Wow did you do something different with your hair?" Genuinely not having a clue. However are we to blame for their looking glass into our world? Or maybe just VH1 for their non stop reality shows that expose our weaves and extensions? Business all out in the streets. Now I come from my grandmother’s school of thought which is there is no need for anyone to see a woman’s “Process.” I hate it when men come into the beauty salon to wait for their wives and girlfriends- I'm like damn seeing my kitchen. Therefore you will not catch me in the street looking like this

However, my girlfriend has no shame rocking her removable hair piece bun at any given moment.

Just the other day she almost left it in a cab and I had to be like, "Girl, seriously. You can't be just forgetting your hair." But she just has no shame. In fact in prepping for her weekend ski trip to the Swiss Alps, we went shopping in the city for a helmet and goggles. We approach this white sales guy to ask his suggestion for the best helmet. He brings over a couple of different options for her to try on. Looking at the size she says, “Can we start with a large, I have a big head complex and can’t take my chances on this not fitting over my head.” The white sales guy insists that the medium should fit if she were to just take down her bun. Now what he meant was to just unwind her hair from the bun to the assumed ponytail. Unfortunately this bun doesn't come with that option- it's either bun or no bun. Sure enough not having any shame in her game she removed the entire bun and in fact asked him to hold it as if it were a bag of potato chips. He didn't seem to have a problem, in fact looking as if he had done this before for other Black girls who had to remove their hair pieces to try on gear for their ski trips. Moments later, viola, whadda ya know the helmet fit and we were off to picking goggles while she clipped back on her bun.
